Remember Youth

by Dale on Aug.21, 2010, under Interest

As I was walking through a cemetery next to my brother’s house in New Hampshire I saw this inscription on the gravestone of a 14 year old girl.

“Stop youth as you pass by, remember you are born to die.”

It seemed to be a very dark final comment when surrounded by the hopeful quips of after life and new dawnings.

Despair Described

I recently watched a Nat Geo special on the world’s toughest prisons.  One of the prisons that was covered was Lurigancho Prison in Peru.  10,000 prisoners with only 100 guards.  This incredible disparity leaves no choice to the prison officials but to put some governing responsibilities of the prison populace into the hands of the prisoners themselves. The other day, as I was wrapping up my work day, I noticed that a good friend of mine had tried to contact me via my IM client.  When I had a moment I took a look at the chat window and below is the conversation that ensued….. (continue reading…)

Quantum Physics

by Dale on Jul.17, 2006, under Interest, Personal, Thoughts

i don’t know really anything about this science. i think it uses the word “quarks” quite a bit…but i may be wrong…maybe that was just something i picked upfrom the last sci-fi movie i saw.

but i was listening to a show about quantum physics and its impact on our lives…didn’t really understand much of it but one statement did stick with me.

fred alan wolf, ph.d in physics, ucla

“the trick to life is not to be in the know but be in the mystery”

don’t know his theology but i do know that he has enough humility to know that he doesn’t know.

i think that possibly the most arrogant belief one can hold is that they know god….isn’t following jesus the beginning of the understanding of just how ignorant we are?

i mean if quantum physics humbles dr. wolf shouldn’t we be more humbled by god?

i scratch my head at those who claim the answers to this life and at the same time say they follow christ.

me? i’m firmly in the mystery still

It could go either way

by Dale on Jun.21, 2006, under Interest, News, Thoughts

Read an interesting article today on an endeavor that hasn’t been attempted before.

Apparently there are a group of Norwegians who are attempting to preserve the world’s food supply by stashing about 3 million of the worlds crop seeds in a frozen vault on some Acrtic island. The project is called Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Take a look at the article. I guess this is a good idea. But that would be in a perfect world…which this isn’t. Potentially this could go either way….this endeavor could be just the thing to preserve the earth’s potential to supply its inhabitants with the food it needs to live….or…..it could be what starts World War III.

Call me a pessimist but based on the way we’ve so graciously handled sharing our oil resources it is very conceivable.

Just what I think.
